Almost every locksmith ad calls itself the top choice. A slogan costs nothing to write. What matters is whether the person who turns up is qualified, honest about price and careful with your property. Here's how to tell.

Check the license

In California, locksmith companies and their employees must be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). You can ask for the license number and check it on the state's online license lookup before work begins.

Five signs of a trustworthy locksmith

1. A clear quote before work starts

You should hear an estimated price on the phone and a firm price before any work begins. If the job changes, the locksmith should explain why and ask before continuing.

2. Identification and a real business name

Expect a business name you can look up, an invoice with contact details and a technician who can show ID.

3. They check yours, too

A good locksmith asks for proof that you live at the address or own the vehicle. It's a sign they take security seriously.

4. Careful methods

Most lockouts can be opened without drilling. If someone reaches for the drill straight away on a standard lock, ask why.

5. Honest reviews and insurance

Look at reviews on independent sites and ask whether the business carries liability insurance.

Red flags

  • A generic name like "Locksmith Service" with no address or website
  • A very low phone price that jumps once they arrive
  • Refusing to give any estimate
  • Unmarked vehicle and no ID
  • Pressure to replace locks that only needed opening

The bottom line

Judge a locksmith by how they work, not by their tagline: licensed, upfront about price, respectful of your property and willing to explain what they're doing.
