Lock rekeying in Albany, CA

Rekeying changes the inside of a lock so old keys stop working, while keeping the hardware you already have. It's one of the simplest ways to take back control of who can get in.

When rekeying makes sense

  • You've moved into a home and don't know who has keys
  • Keys were lost or stolen
  • A roommate, tenant or employee has moved on
  • Contractors or cleaners had keys during a project
  • You want one key to open the front, back and side doors

How rekeying works

Most door locks use a pin tumbler cylinder. A key lifts a stack of small pins to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. When we rekey, we take the cylinder out, swap the pins for a new combination and cut keys to match. The lock body, handle and finish stay as they are.

Rekeying or replacing?

Rekeying is usually the better value when locks are in good working order. Replacement is the better choice when locks are worn, damaged, low quality or when you want a different style, a stronger deadbolt or a smart lock. We'll look at your hardware and give you a straight answer.

Homes, rentals and businesses

We rekey house locks, rental units between tenants and business locks, including setting up master key systems. Read more in why you should rekey when you move.

Frequently asked questions

Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?

Usually, because you keep the existing hardware. We'll quote both options if your locks are worn.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most standard pin tumbler locks can. Some locks, including certain smart locks and very old or damaged ones, are better replaced.

Can I rekey a rental I'm renting?

Check your lease and ask your landlord first. Many are happy to approve it, and they'll usually need a copy of the new key.
